The
All Stars Band has become an annual pilgrimage for many ex members of
the Royal Marines Band Service. Before presenting cheques to beneficiaries,
Stephen Misson informed the band and audience of some of the long distance
travellers who give up their time and efforts at their own expense to
make these concerts so successful. These included members from all parts
of the British Isles as well as our honorary member from the Dutch Marines,
Edwin Musquetiere and two musicians travelling all the way from Australia,
Pat Trevis and Ginge Chamberlain, both for the second consecutive year.
Sunday 17th March 2006 saw the largest band ever with 131 musicians
taking part at the Winter Gardens, Margate playing to almost a capacity
audience in what has become a ‘must see’ event. The day
started at 2pm with gruelling rehearsals under the baton of former Principal
Director of Music Paul Neville when every piece was practiced to an
acceptable standard considering the limited time available. But make
no mistake, this standard is high, proving that the musicians can still
perform almost to the level that the Royal Marines trained them –
for some many years ago, the oldest member being Tom Merrett now 84
and closely followed by three other in their 80s.
Following
rehearsals there was a family buffet enjoyed by some 260 family and
friends which gave the men a chance to meet old friends and catch up
the past years. Many a dog-eared photograph changed hands. It was during
the buffet that a raffle was drawn for two digital cameras. From the
proceeds of the previous year’s concert, the band had bought a
quality digital camera for Deal Hospital Minor Injuries Unit only to
find that they had already purchased one without telling us. It was
decided to raffle this camera between the members of the band hoping
to recoup some of the money spent purchasing it. Such was the generosity
of the band we soon had enough money to buy a second digital camera.
The lucky recipients were George Simpson and Bob Gill, neither of whom
owns a computer to process the shots. No doubt they will be taking their
memory sticks to Boots regularly.
The concert
proceeded well and it didn’t seem as if we were getting our second
wind when the interval was upon us. The second half opening by playing
Royal Salute specially purchased and played as a tribute to Richard
Waterer. There were features for the cornet, trombone and clarinet sections
and a specially arranged version of Drumbeat Jamboree to incorporate
just four side drums from our percussion section of nine players. Mike
Scurfield, dressed in Royal Marines battledress and beret, led the singing
in a new arrangement called Songs of the Forties by Paul Neville which
enjoyed by the audience as well as the band.
Before
the final item, Wagner’s overture Reinzi, cheques were presented
from the proceeds of the concert. Major John Kelly informed the audience
of his delight in being invited whilst accepting a cheque for £4000
for the Royal Marines Band Benevolent Fund and Deal’s Town Mayor,
a very musical person himself, enthused about the musicianship of the
band as he received a cheque for £2000 in his role as President
of the Deal Memorial Bandstand Trust. Two further cheques were donated
to former Warrant Officers Mike Baxter and Graham Edwards for The Kent
Venture Boat and Prostate Cancer Support Group respectively. Five other
charities benefited from the concert one of them being the Hockeredge
& Jasmine Centre in Westgate because one of the band’s members
is now resident there with early onset dementia.
As always,
there was a further opportunity to swap yarns and to pat each other
on the back in the bar after the concert where we finally parted company
with the pledge to return in 2007 on the 11th March where we will once
more make music in the manner that the Royal Marines trained us.
A total
of £136,128.50 has now been donated to charity, £68,000
of it going to the Royal Marines Band Benevolent Fund. If you would
like to included in future concerts, please contact Stephen Misson,
