Served in the RMB from 1943 – 1958. He was a clarinet and violin player but also played saxophone. After boys service in the Isle of Man he went on to serve in 8 sea going ships bands (one twice and HMS Belfast during the Amethyst incident and the start of the Korean War). He served in the bands of 7 shore establishments and between all of these drafts he returned to the RMSM on 9 occasions. In his 12 years mans service that was 24 moves making it an average of less than 6 months for each draft. After leaving the Band Service he served in the Derbyshire Police for 28 years attaining the rank of Inspector. He ended his police career responsible for the policing in South Derbyshire. He gave up playing for several years but then got back into it mainly on saxophone. David played for many years with the Nottinghamshire Police Band only giving up when travelling became too much. He then continued with the Burton Concert Band. After the Deal bombing he played each year with the All Stars band on alto saxophone and only missed playing on two occasions. He leaves a wife, 2 children and 3 grandchildren. |
