I'm informed that on January 2nd we lost another one of our family, one
Roy "Nobby" Slater (for the use of) who I know will be sorely
missed. A man of great wit, charm and someone whom I felt very priviledged
to have met. See updates on the site for funeral arrangements. Please let's
as many of us who can, attend and I know Nobby would have enjoyed a Guinness
or two with you after the gig. God bless you Roy.

Following the imformation of Roy Slater's Funeral, I am afraid that I will
not be able to attend much that I would have wished to do so, due to ill
health. So, I took it upon myself to look for how to make a donation to
the CHESTNUT APPEAL, in memory of dear old Roy. In case any one else wishes
to know, I offer the following address where donations should be sent.

Happy new year to all bandies, their families, friends and friends of
the RN/RM. I have recently been drumming in the HMS Seahawk Band (RNAS
Culdrose) and my first band was that of the Greenwich RHS in Suffolk under
Roger Jones where I was head of the COD for 3 years. I would just like
to mention that Roger has done a great job with the children there and
the musical standard has risen over the last decade (CD's are available
and well worth buying). They could do with a retired bugler working there
full time to help put the icing on the cake!

I know there are quite a number of ex/RMB's living in the East Kent area
and many of you I'm sure will remember Dave Stonebridge. Well Dave has been
'missing' from the Deal area for several months but has resurfaced in Westgate
near Margate. He is living in a residential home (The Hockeredge Centre,
2 Canterbury Rd) but although he is in good shape physically he does suffer
from occasional memory loss and this is becoming more and more frequent.
However he would welcome visitors but please be prepared. He has no family
in the area so becomes very lonely and very bored. Try to look him up if
you can as I'm sure he would appreciate it.
My best wishes to all for a happy and successful new year

Dear All,
Whilst dipping into the site tonight, I thought perhaps it would be a good
idea to also add my Good Wishes for Christmas and the coming year to everyone
out there in all four corners of the globe. (Ray ('Lofty'), I can only remember
you in Barham House circa 1957-59ish!! Would that be right? I was only 2ft
high then and you were about 8ft by comparison!!
Maxie, you don't know me as I never had the pleasure of serving with you,
but I have a very good mate that did and Dave Stockham (who I shall be having
a jar or two with over the festive period!)sends you his very best for a
return to the old upbeat healthy Maxie that everyone knew and loved! Get
well old chum asap.
Oh! & Jem T. we never did get together pre. Christmas. My workload seems
to have constantly prevented me from doing so, & even when I have been to
Worthing, I've never had enough time there to catch up with you! - So now,
what's your excuse!? Have a good one both of you. I'll try again in 2005!
Mike Webster & Stella (if you see this), I've tried E.Mailing, but you must
have changed your address? Each time it's returned to me as undelivered!??
Where are you? Have a good one too, along with everyone else that knows
or may have known me. Cheers! Derek.

Hi Frank,
I read your letter about the "Shiny Sheff" with such enjoyment. It brought
back all the memories that I treasure so much of the time spent on the
West Indies station. Not only round the islands, but up and down both
sides of the States as far as Canada both sides, then down South America
as far as Chile. What a time to be in the "mob", during the fifties! The
best time. No wars going on after Korea fizzled out, and best of all,
no tourist trade. All the islands were still natural, and around the States
we were a novelty. People were so keen to see the ship, and to invite
members of the crew home with them. Good times.
By the way. Those two cornet players you refered to were myself and Tom
Procter. We used to play that part in harmony like two little turtle doves
with our heads together.
Anyway, Frank. Thanks for the memory, and I hope you are keeping well
and that life is treating you kindly.

recommended you to me and I'm very glad he did. I'm currently working
in schools in the Southampton area having left the RMB in 92. Miss the
coffee-boat banter, as school teachers don't seem to be on the same wavelength
as Bandies. Just for info, I've formed a Fishing club in the Pompey area
and Dick Granger, John Yates, Sid Tanner, Dee Douglas and myself all go
out in a boat once a month. We don't catch a lot but we do spin a few
ditties. If anyone wants to contact any of the above please do so through
me. Also if any ex RMB wants to go fishing just drop me a line........No
pun intended! See you in the countermarch. Hammy.

something similar for the rest of the Corps? It's great for you guys to
keep in touch and remember our departed brothers. On a sad note, I recently
was coming back from the continent, when I decided to visit the depot
at Deal, so sad to see that once thriving community of Royal Marine life
deserted and in decline. Even sadder was the state of the commemorative
plaque to our bandies killed by the IRA, it was covered in bird crap!
Can anyone locally go in and clean it up periodically?

Comments: Dickie/Richard, Just to let you know that, by total accident,
I have just stumbled across the impressive web site that you have created
for the Royal Marine Band Service. Congratulations, it's absolutely excellent.
However, I was particularly delighted to see that you have dedicated it
to the memory of my uncle, Sir Vivian Dunn. I think he would be very touched
by this if he were still alive today. Vivian was my father's elder brother.
I'm afraid I didn't inherit the same musical brilliance they both had
but, when at school, I used to play the clarinet in our CCF band and when
I became the band's drum major in 1969, Uncle Vivian invited me to come
to Deal for some instruction from D/Major Bowden. It was a fabulous privilege
and experience which I can still remember vividly to this day. I was delighted
to meet D/Major Bowden again, after all these years, at my uncle's memorial
service at St Martins in the Fields in 1995 (perhaps you were there too?).
Anyway, although I keep a close eye on what's happening in the RM Band
Service as well as the military band world in general, I didn't succumb
to a career in the services (although I spent many years in the TA - Royal
Signals) preferring instead to follow an engineering and management career
in BT. Having worked all over the country I now work in London, although
we live in Poole, Dorset. Anyway, good luck with your web sites and thank
you for keeping my uncle's name alive/ Best Wishes. Vivian Dunn (I am
called "Vivian II" in the family!)

at the recent bugler's reunion. I joined in May 1944,just in time to watch
the invasion fleet sail away to Normandy. I was doing bugle practice on
the seafront at Eastney at the time. It is not much cop being a bugler
though, if you can't remember the calls. I was sent back to barracks in
disgrace from H.M.S.Queen Elizabeth when I blew "Grog call"
instead of "Liberty men and caused a mutiny. A musical failure I
am afraid. But then all was not lost, for much later in life I sang with
the Treverva Mail Voice Choir and you don't do that without hitting the
right notes. Tending roses in Spain now. It's been a good life!

to become a bugler. Unfortunately I was not accepted because I have eczema.
So I am currently the principle percussionist and a soloist in the Drum
Corps of The Band of The Island of Jersey. In February '94 I was lucky
enough to go to the Royal Marines Barracks in Poole, Dorset. For a whole
week. The other members of the Drum Corps and I were there to be trained
by two actual Buglers. Thanks very much guys! Also in December '95, The
Jersey Band were invited to play in The Birmingham International Tattoo.
The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines Plymouth were the main band and
it was an experience to play alongside the best musicians in the world.
Good luck to all the recruits who got in when I didn't, especially my
good friend Nicholas Skelhorn. Keep up the good work!

Your homepage is added to the list of links from our homepage. We are

was a really great experience to see and hear one of the Royal Marines
Bands "live". I understand that this year a massed Band of the
Royal Marines will partake in the Breda National Tattoo here in Holland.
For sure we will be there to see the Royal Marines. We wish you all the

starting as a bugler (1954) and finishing as solo cornet at RNAS Lossiemouth
, where unfortunately my playing days ceased when the light blue jobs
took over there in 1972 and I remained. On leaving the Andrew 12 years
ago, I came out to the Middle East, initially in Oman and latterly in
the UAE. I have been invited to serve on the committee of the newly formed
St George society here, We plan to have a Formal dinner ball on 23 April.
I would like to play Roast Beef of Old England and similar pieces whilst
the guests go into the ballroom to take their places for dinner. I have
looked and asked in a number of record shops here but have been unsuccessful.
Widening my search area I looked for and found your page. Can you help
me in this quest please either by giving me the Title, Reference etc.
of a tape or disc or by sending me a copy of suitable music. If the latter
I shall ensure that there is honourable mention of the fact on the programme.

Comments: I've been an admirer of the music of Her Majesty's Royal Marine
band for many years. A local radio station often played your music. Now
I'm in search of recordings. How available are they in the US? Do you
know of any particular retail outlets or is it possible to acquire recordings
through mail order? Please advise, and keep up the good work.

bearers" out there remember me from the Falklands and the SS Uganda
drop me a line. I was a "Doc" down there with NP1830. Still
remember the concerts in "Seaview Ward" and I never got the
chance to thank you all for the hard work you did during that period.
It was appreciated. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.
